The infographic is about the gender hate expressions used online among teenagers. In Korea, there was growing hatred on gender since 2016, the murder of a young woman near the Gangnam station. It was the case the man murdered a woman because he did not like the woman.

Many Koreans expressed anger for this absurd reason. This triggered the division of gender and hatred towards each gender. As the feminism movement in Korea got extreme, women showed mirroring methods which females mirror the words that are used in male-centered communities to make it equal to all genders. This made many males upset and from there people started to blame each gender by using gender hatred words like ‘Han nam’ and ‘Han nyeo.’ (which are the words demeaning both males and females).

This use of gender hatred words on online affected teenagers. Among 129 people, aged 10 to 30, 54.5% started to use hatred words since elementary school. 89% of people answered that they hear hatred words from online and 92.5% of people think that gender conflict is serious. This states that gender hatred expressions used in society are serious. There was a more specific survey on gender hatred expressions of teenagers with other hatred expressions that has been used.

The survey was done by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRC). Among 500 teenagers, aged 15 to 17, 63% women experienced hatred expressions while 58.6% men experienced hatred expressions. 82.9% said that they experienced hatred expressions on online and social media placed the highest with 80%. The real problem showed that 48.3% and 42.7% of teenagers do not think gender demeaning is hatred expressions. 86.2% of teenagers acknowledged that hatred expressions can lead to crimes and they want the government to improve awareness by offering education and doing campaigns about hatred expressions.

In Korea, there are more exhibitions about feminism and hatred. One of the exhibitions held in 2020, named ‘The World We Made.’ It talks about discrimination and the hatred in history by showing various examples. The short video called, ‘혐오를 던지다,’ uses crumpled papers written with hate expressions to express how hatred expressions can be easily threw to each other.

Through this infographic project, I want people to know more about the problem of hatred expressions in our society and educate teenagers on comprehensive sexuality to fix the problem.
