Wider Context

The context focused more on the society and the real problems of the society. It started based on the news I watched like drinking alone, ageing society, decreasing in childbirth, and hate crimes.

Initially, I focused on the connection of drinking alone and alcohol addiction. However, it did not give much information about the connection between them. I focused on two potential topics which are the connection between decreasing childbirth and the work culture and gender hatred. In Korea, from 2020, the death rate exceeded the birth rate. As many Koreans choose to work over a family, people are having problems balancing work and their life. Koreans work 46.8 hours per week on average full time. The government acknowledged the problems of work culture, announced a new law that limits weekly working hours 68 to 52 hours.

However, the problem was the strict structured work culture. Women can use maternity leave when they need but among 255 females, 80% said using maternity leave is uncomfortable. Also, women think twice before they start the family because they are afraid of losing their jobs. The statistics among various age groups of women working showed that aged 35 to 39 placed the lowest percentage of 54.9%, which is the most age group giving birth.

This uncomfortable fact leads to another topic, gender conflict. Gender conflict started from a young woman’s death in 2016. The male confessed that he killed the woman because he did not like her. This fired the conflict between males and females. As many women started #MeToo movement and feminism movement, there was the rise of assault cases on women from 45,306 in 2015 to 52,876 in 2019.

Also, gender assault on online has been increased to 47 % which is 9 % more than the previous two years. Gender hatred expression happens more among young people. As they grew the conflict wide, I thought now is the time to understand more about each other than assaulting others because of their genders.

I decided to focus more on gender hate expressions online to talk about seriousness on hatred expressions.
